Apple looking to expand manufacturing base in India: Sources

New Delhi [India]April 19 (ANI): In a series of meetings with the Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed confidence about a long-term working relationship with India.

“Thank you PM @narendramodi for the warm welcome. We share your vision of the positive impact of technology on India’s future – from education & developers to manufacturing,” tweeted Tim Cook on Wednesday after meeting with PM Modi. And to the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country.

Prime Minister Modi also tweeted after the meeting, “Great to meet you, @tim_cook! Happy to exchange views on a wide range of topics and highlight the tech-driven changes taking place in India.

Government sources said Apple is praising the stability of India’s policy, calling it “clearly impressive”.

Considering India as its long-term market, the iPhone maker has expressed interest in expansion plans including manufacturing the latest products.

Currently, Apple’s employment force in India is 1 lakh. It is expected to go up to 2 lakh in the coming years, sources said.

In terms of skilled labor required, the Central Government is committed to supply the required manpower, including providing for customized requirements. It is in the public knowledge that Gati Shakti Vidyalaya is preparing curriculum for manufacturers. Sources say that a similar arrangement can be made for Apple as well.

Tim Cook is currently in India for the launch of two Apple Stores. The first one was launched in Mumbai on Tuesday while the second retail store will be launched in Delhi on Thursday.

In another development, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav also tweeted about her meeting with CEO Tim Cook.

Late on Wednesday night, the minister posted, “Met with @tim_cook, CEO, Apple. Discussed deepening Apple’s engagement in India in manufacturing, electronics exports, app economy, skilling, sustainability and job creation, especially for women. Jointly building a long term and strong relationship.

Minister of State for IT and Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar also met the CEOs of the tech giants on Wednesday.

The MoS tweeted, “Delighted to meet @tim_cook CEO, @Apple and his team to join India’s digital journey and Apple’s strategic and long-term partnership with it. We discussed manufacturing, exports, skill development of youth, expansion of app n innovation economy and job creation. #NewIndia #IndiaTechade @_DigitalIndia”. (ANI)
