Apple settles $50 million in faulty MacBook keyboard lawsuit

(Reuters) – Apple Inc. has agreed to pay $50 million to settle a class-action lawsuit by customers who claimed it knew and hid that “butterfly” keyboard on its MacBook laptop computer. were prone to failure.

The proposed preliminary settlement was filed late Monday in federal court in San Jose, California, and requires a judge’s approval.

Customers claimed that MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro keyboards suffer from sticky and unresponsive keys, and that even small amounts of dust or debris can make typing difficult.

He also said that Apple’s service program was inadequate because the Cupertino, California-based company often provided replacement keyboards with similar problems.

The agreement covers customers who purchased MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and most MacBook Pro models between 2015 and 2019 in seven US states: California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington.

Apple denies wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement. It did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

Lawyers for clients expect a maximum payment of $395 to people who replaced multiple keyboards, $125 to people who replaced one keyboard, and $50 to people who replaced key caps. .

Customers are also eligible for free keyboard repairs for up to four years after their purchase.

The clients’ law firms, Girard Sharp LLP and Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP, can seek up to $15 million in legal fees, which will be deducted from the $50 million settlement fund, court papers show.
