April’s ‘Pink Moon’ to light up the sky this weekend

This weekend, a rare ‘Pink Moon’ will light up the sky at 12:25 a.m. on April 17th. Although the nickname ‘Pink Moon’ is downright misleading, it will actually glow orange. The moon is associated with the springtime blooms of the Phlox subulata plant, a pink wildflower native to eastern North America.

The Pink Moon aligns with many religious holidays. It is called the Paschal Moon in the Christian Church calendar because it is the full moon before Easter. For Hindus, the moon signifies Hanuman Jayanti.

The full moon of April is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, Growing Moon, and Fish Moon. In the UK, the full moon of April is called the Egg Moon.

Unlike the last two years, this April’s Pink Moon will not be a supermoon. A full moon occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The Moon’s orbit is slightly inclined to the plane of Earth’s orbit, so the Moon does not pass through the Earth’s shadow every time it completes one revolution of the Earth.

After the Pink Moon, there are still eight full moon events yet to occur in 2022, two of which qualify as supermoons.
