Army to increase surveillance, fire power capability along border with China – Times of India

Artillery units of the Indian Army have already deployed K-9 Vajra Tracked Self Propelled Howitzers, ultra-light M-777 Howitzers, PINAKA rocket systems and Bow gun system.
Defense establishment sources said the Army is planning to equip its artillery units along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). pilotless aircraft (UAV) with a range of up to 90 km.
“We are looking at buying UAVs with a range of 15-20 km, as well as UAVs with surveillance capability of up to 80 km,” a source said.
At present, almost all the UAVs in the Army’s inventory are being operated by aviation units of the Army.
Sources said the Army is ready to procure a new batch of 100 more K9 Vajra howitzers in addition to the 100 such guns ordered in 2017.

The K9 Vajra was originally procured for deployment in the desert, but after the eastern Ladakh standoff, the Army deployed a large number of howitzers in that high altitude area.
Sources said minor adjustments were made to the deployment of the tracked artillery in eastern Ladakh.
“We are also procuring winterization kits so that the howitzers can operate in sub-zero temperatures,” the source said.
Sources said the Army is in the process of procuring the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, commonly known as ATAGS and Mounted Gun System (MGS).
He added that the process of induction of more advanced Pinaka weapon systems is underway, six more regiments of the systems are being procured and their deliveries will begin soon.
Sources said the new Pinaka regiment would be equipped with an electronically and mechanically improved weapon system that would be capable of firing a wide variety of ammunition over long ranges.
He said that one regiment of Pinaka has been inducted in the high altitude areas after extensive verification along the northern border. Ministry of Defence Procurement of guided extended range rockets for Pinaka has already been approved.
“The rocket will be capable of firing with significant accuracy over long ranges,” the source said.
The Army is also in the process of acquiring the ‘Loitering Munition System’, which is enhancing its surveillance, target acquisition and precision attack capabilities.
“We are in the process of procuring an indigenously designed and developed Loitering Weapon System with enhanced strike capability,” the source said.
On indigenously developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), sources said that it is in advanced stages of testing.
This gun system has several firsts – a 25-liter chamber, long range, as well as a fast and constant rate of fire.
Sources said user trials on gun systems have been done satisfactorily and there are some procedural issues which are being taken care of.
