A competition for senior village heads in Arunachal Pradesh has shown that it is never too late to draw, paint or write.

A local association of ‘gaonburas’ and ‘gaonburis’ (village chiefs and chieftains) at Ziro, the headquarters of the state’s Lower Subansiri district, organized a drawing competition for their counterparts in and around the city on 12 June.

“Gaonbura’ and ‘Gaonburi’ had many illiterate people who took up crayons and sketch pens for the first time in their lives. The purpose of the competition was to let them come out of their routine work solving civil cases,” said organizer Yachang Tacho.

The institution of ‘Gaonburas’ and ‘Gaonbari’, called GB, was established under the Assam Frontier (Administration of Justice) Regulations, 1945. Arunachal Pradesh has about 9,500 GB which act as a bridge apart from dealing with traditional laws. Traditional and civil administration.

“The competition was also an attempt to instill a love for pens, pencils, books and the wonderful world they created. If the biggest in society pick up a pen and pencil, so will the youth,” Mr. Tacho said.

Out of 36 ‘Gaonbura’ and ‘Gaonburi’ who participated in the competition, 30 had never been to school. The remaining six had studied till the fifth standard.

Mr. Tacho said the drawing contest prices would be given on July 5 during Dree, a major festival of the Apatani community. The creativity of all the participants will also be displayed on that day.
