England captain Joe Root said the visitors had a rare chance to win a Test match on their disappointing tour of Australia at the Ashes in Hobart, but their poor batting let them down. Australia pacers Scott Boland, Cameron Greene and captain Pat Cummins all took three wickets each as England were bowled out for 124 from 68/0.

England lost opener Rory Burns on the last ball of the second session on the third day and then lost the rest of their wickets within the night session of the second pink ball Test of the series.

“It hurts, bad performance with the bat today,” Root said. Root said he wants to continue as England captain.

“It felt like we had a real opportunity to go and win this Test match and after a very good start there were some really bad dismissals. That’s when we felt too much in the game to get beaten up. disappointing for.”

Rory Burns and Zak Crawley got off to a decent start to England’s chase with the highest opening partnership of the series, but the match soon reverted to a more familiar script.

Cameron Green (3-21) started the tea by dismissing Burns for 26, returning after the break dismissed David Malan for 10 in the same fashion and the batsman chipped on.

Crowley had scored 36 when he became the 22-year-old all-rounder’s third victim, and England were in serious trouble when Ben Stokes dismissed Nathan Lyon for five at deep square leg off Mitchell Starc.

Root held his side past the hundred, but fell for 11 when a ball from Scott Boland fell along the surface and into his off-stump, forcing the England captain to go home without a Test century in Australia.

“At this stage, you have to bang the performance and we haven’t managed to do that on this journey,” Root said.

“As a batting group, many times we have been bowled out for under 200 and if you don’t score runs on the board you are never going to win a Test match.”
