Former English first-class cricketer Umar Rashid has been included in the Pakistan squad as an assistant to the fast bowling coach for the Asia Cup starting August 27 in the United Arab Emirates.

Umar Rashid, who has played for Middlesex and Sussex, has worked in the development of many of Pakistan’s national fast bowlers since his early days, including helping Mohammad Hasnain return to competitive cricket.

Hasnain replaced Shaheen Shah Afridi in the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup after Shaheen was ruled out of the marquee event due to a knee injury. Shaheen injured his right knee while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Shaheen will also miss the home T20I series against England but is expected to return to competitive cricket with a New Zealand tri-series in October, followed by the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

The 22-year-old Hasnain has represented Pakistan in 18 T20Is in which he has taken 17 wickets. On 22 August, the Pakistan Cricket Board said that Hasnain would join the squad from the UK, where he was playing for Oval Invincible in The Hundred competition.

In his new role with the Babar Azam-led side, Umar will support Pakistan’s fast bowling coach Shaun Tait in the UAE. Umar has been included in the list of player support personnel on the recommendation of head coach Saqlain Mushtaq.

Pakistan will take on India in their opening campaign in a Group A match at the Asia Cup in Dubai on 28 August.
