A total of 1,245 passengers were evacuated by a special train from Ditokchera on Sunday. They reached Silchar and Badarpur.
Those who could cross the bridge reached the place 135 km, where a special train was standing for them. “All the passengers on the special train were brought to Damchera, from where they were sent to Badarpur and Silchar,” he said.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) CEO GD Tripathi said elderly passengers, who could not cross the railway bridge to reach the evacuation train, are being airlifted on a priority basis. The process started on Sunday morning. “A train was stuck due to landslide between Dima Hasao and Cachar district. The railway bridge was torn down, although the rail track is still intact. Most of the passengers got down from it,” Tripathi said.
Another train, 15615 Guwahati-Silchar Express, also got stuck at New Haflong due to the blocked train route. However, the passengers traveled by road to Maibong, where a special train was waiting to take them to Guwahati. Assam Rifles assisted in the rescue operation at New Haflong. “There were 1,200 to 1,300 passengers stranded in New Haflong, but many of them had already left for their destinations by road. The number of passengers stranded in New Haflong till Sunday afternoon was around 800,” Dey said.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in the state has worsened as the affected population increased from 24,000 to 56,000 on Saturday evening. According to the latest ASDMA report, 56,669 people have been affected by the floods in six districts – Cachar, Dhemaji, Hojai, Karbi Anglong West, Nagaon and Nalbari. South Assam’s Cachar district was the worst affected at 41,037.
Around 4,300 people have been shifted to relief camps in Cachar, Hojai and West Karbi Anglong districts. About 10,321 hectares of crop area have been submerged in flood waters. Three people were killed in Dima Hasao on Saturday morning after a landslide buried their house in Haflong’s Kokai Pungchi area.
