The ruling BJP on Tuesday alleged that a “third force” had instigated organizations in the state to smear a government hoarding written in Assamese with black ink in Bengali-dominated Silchar. The saffron party said this “third force” had also instigated organizations to demand replacement of the Assamese advertisement with a Bengali advertisement.

The force wants to disrupt the peace and harmony prevailing in the state, but their efforts have been thwarted by prompt action by the administration and sensible response from the public. The saffron party also claimed that the Congress, Left parties and hardline groups have been trying to divide the people of Assam on linguistic lines for decades. BJP spokesperson Ramakrishna Ghosh said Assamese and Bengalis have always lived in harmony in the state and there is no political, social or economic conflict between them. Assam has been home to various languages like Karbi, Missing and Bodo for centuries and Assamese has been the unifying language for all peoples. Similarly, Assamese and Bengali languages have appreciated each other in their development over the centuries, Ghosh and another BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sharma said in a joint statement here. However, using the divide and rule policy of the British, Congress, Left parties and radical groups have been trying to forge a gap between Assamese and Bengali speakers for decades, he said.

Silchar Police has started investigation by registering an FIR against the incident. A hoarding of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Assamese was allegedly defaced by members of the Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) and the All Bengali Students Youth Organization (ABSyo) demanding the use of Bengali in place of Assamese in the Barak Valley region on Sunday. Had given. The video shows purported activists of both the organizations climbing a ladder and removing hoardings in front of Silchar railway station. He also wrote ‘Bangla Likhna’ (write in Bengali) and the names of two organizations below it. Most of the billboards and other public displays in the Barak Valley are generally in Bengali. The Assam Official Language Act, 1960 adopted Assam as the official language of the state. This included provisions for the use of Bengali for all administrative and official purposes in the Bengali-majority Barak Valley, which includes Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts. The use of Bengali for official purposes was authorized after a mass movement by the Bengali-speaking population, especially in the Barak Valley, which led to the death of 11 protesters at the Silchar Railway Station on May 16, 1961.
