Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday reviewed the progress of work on 97 model high schools in tea gardens as these educational institutions prepare to start the academic session for the first time from May 10. The Chief Minister held video conferencing with the Deputy Commissioners and directed them to visit these schools regularly and complete the admission process on time. He also asked the officials to ensure the availability of adequate furniture, computers and electricity connections in all the newly established schools with immediate effect.

He said that the recruitment of Grade IV staff in every school should be done at the earliest. The Chief Minister asked the state education department to ensure formation of school management and development committees and opening of bank accounts of all schools within seven days.

Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said that the state government would open 100 more such model schools in tea gardens and one institute would cover four tea gardens. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu was also present in the virtual meeting. Sarma had recently held a meeting with the principals of newly constructed schools where he claimed that high schools have been set up for the first time in tea garden areas by the government.

The officials were planning to provide breakfast to the students in these schools apart from the mid-day meal. The chief minister had urged principals to “convert model high schools into model educational institutions” and asked inspectors of schools to make frequent visits to support and guide teachers and students. The BJP, in its election manifesto, had promised to set up such model schools in tea garden areas.
