Assam: Madrasa with ‘link’ to terrorist organizations demolished after teacher’s arrest

Authorities on Wednesday demolished the premises of a madrasa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district for allegedly carrying out ‘jihadi’ activities. A police officer gave this information. A madrassa teacher was arrested last week for his suspected links with terror outfits of al-Qaeda and the Ansarul Bangla team in the Indian subcontinent.

About a dozen excavators have been deployed to demolish the two-storey building of Kabatari Maa Arif Madrasa in Jogighopa area of the district, the official said.

This is the second such action this week as a madrassa in Barpeta district, which had allegedly sheltered two Bangladeshi operatives of the Ansarul Bangla team for four years, was demolished on Monday. One of the alleged Bangladeshi terror operatives, the principal, a teacher and another person associated with the madrasa were also arrested by the Barpeta police.

A Bongaigaon police officer said the Kabaytari Maa Arif Madrasa was being demolished following the recovery of incriminating documents belonging to ‘jihadi’ elements from the canteen during an operation by Goalpara police on Tuesday night. Goalpara police had arrested a madrasa teacher last week and raids were conducted on the basis of information provided by him.

The police officer said the district disaster management officials had issued notices to the madrassa for violating building rules and declared that it was not fit for human habitation. The students of educational institutions with residential facilities left for their homes on Tuesday night. The district administration helped the students vacate the campus.

In most of the cases, the parents came and took their children, the official said. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that the state was becoming a “hub of jihadi activities” in the Indian subcontinent with around five modules linked to al-Qaeda and the Ansarul Bangla team in the past few months.

Since March this year, over 40 people linked to ‘jihadi’ activities, including Bangladeshis, have been arrested in the state.
