Assam Police on Himanta Biswa Sarma’s threat: The Assam Police alerted Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all districts and the police commissioner of Guwahati after a pro-Khalistan leader allegedly threatened Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in an audio message. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Special Branch Hiren Nath said the Assam Police is verifying with central agencies about the authenticity of the audio clip.

Hiren Nath said, “But we have alerted the Superintendents of Police of all the districts and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. We are verifying it now.”

In the purported audio clip, the pro-Khalistani leader reportedly said “This message is for Himanta Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam. Your government is harassing and torturing pro-Khalistan Sikhs in Assam. And also torturing those who is in jail. Listen carefully CM Sarma, the fight is between pro-Khalistan Sikhs and the Indian regime. Sarma you don’t pray for this violence. We want the liberation of Punjab from Indian occupation through a peaceful democratic process of Khalistan plebiscite Sarma, if your government is going to commit atrocities and harass Sikhs, you will be held accountable for it.”

Who is Gurpatwant Singh Pannu:

The man in the audio clip claimed that he was Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of the banned organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Notably, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh has been absconding since March 18, the day the Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt for him.

What the DGP of Assam said:

The action came nearly three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters stormed the Ajnala police station in Amritsar on 23 February, demanding the release of his close aide Lovepreet Toofan. Earlier on Thursday, Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh appeared in a new video and said that he was not “a fugitive” and would soon “appear before the world”.

This new video comes a day after the fundamentalist preacher, who is being chased by the police, released an unverified video urging “Sikh Sangat” to come together if they want to “save” Punjab.
