Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said such activities by some members of the Miya community posed a threat to the “Assamese identity”.

“How can they (Miya community) claim that the plow is their identity? All the farmers of the state have been using it for centuries. It is only lungi which they can claim as their own,” Sarma said on the sidelines of an event. Program.

He said those who set up the museum would have to answer to the expert committee on what basis the claims were made.

The proposal to set up Mia Museum was first given by former Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed in 2020. He had written a letter to the director of the museums requesting for its establishment in Shrimant Sankardev Kalakshetra so that the culture and heritage of Bengali speaking Muslims living there could be displayed.
