Assam professor gets bail for criticizing government policies

An associate professor of a college in Assam’s Hailakandi district, who was arrested for allegedly sending emails to officials criticizing government policies and using unparliamentary words against the chief minister, has been granted bail by a local court. Granted, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

He said the police had registered a suo motu case against the accused on the basis of his email and after nearly 18 hours of interrogation, he was arrested on Saturday.

“The accused went for bail, which was given to him late Saturday evening,” the officer said.

The officer said that he had sent emails to several government officials, including the Hailakandi Superintendent of Police, which were highly hateful and communal in nature.

He said the associate professor is accused of attempting to insult other religious beliefs with the aim of creating a divisive atmosphere.

He said he is also being accused of impersonating his minor son to criticize government policies.

“The e-mails contained abusive language and highly offensive words against officials of the Assam government, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

“In the email, he criticized the educational system and tried to promote a book written by him, which is mainly based on Islamic faith and virtue,” he said.

The senior official claimed that it was a “deliberate and malicious intent to hurt religious sentiments and an attempt to insult other religious beliefs with the aim of creating a divisive atmosphere”.

He allegedly impersonated his child, who studies in Class IV, and submitted an objectionable petition against the government program ‘Gunotsav’, an exercise to evaluate government schools, the official said. .
