At least 30 children in US test positive for monkeypox: report

Local media quoted officials as saying that more than 30 children in the United States have tested positive for monkeypox.

Fox News reported that at least 31 children are positive for the virus, with 11 states and jurisdictions reporting pediatric cases.

Data from the Texas State Department of Health Services shows that there are nine pediatric patients in the state.

The agency’s data shows 18,989 monkeypox and orthopoxvirus cases nationwide.

Meanwhile, the first death of a man suffering from monkeypox has been reported in Texas.

The Texas State Department of Health Services (DSHS) said in a statement Tuesday (local time) that the patient was an adult living in Harris County.

“Monkeypox is a serious disease, especially for people with weakened immune systems,” John Hellerstedt, DSHS commissioner, said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We continue to urge people to seek treatment if they have been exposed to monkeypox or have symptoms of the disease,” he said.

According to The Hill, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had confirmed more than 18,000 cases of the virus in all 50 states as of Monday, but officials had not yet confirmed any deaths.

The virus is mostly spread to men who have sex with men, but anyone can get it through direct contact with an infected person. According to the release, people who have been diagnosed with monkeypox should stay at home and avoid close contact with others until the rash has completely gone away and a new layer of skin has completely formed. It should be noted that World Health Organization The report had previously reported that the number of monkeypox cases globally dropped by 21 percent in the past week. The UN health agency reported 5,907 new weekly cases and said two countries, Iran and Indonesia, reported their first cases. Currently, according to the CBC, more than 45,000 cases have been reported in 98 countries since the end of April.

The WHO said last month the number of cases in the US was 60 per cent, while cases in Europe were around 38 per cent. It said infections in the US showed a “sustained sharp increase”.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said that most of the monkeypox cases are coming from Europe and America – in men who have sex with men. Back in July, Tedros declared that the global monkeypox outbreak represented a public health emergency of international concern.

Most people usually recover from monkeypox Within a few weeks without treatment. Its symptoms are initially flu-like, with fever, chills, and swollen lymph nodes, which are then accompanied by a widespread rash. According to the WHO, the disease can be more severe in young children, pregnant women and individuals who have low immunity.

The virus can enter the human body through broken skin, respiratory tract, eyes, nose and mouth, and bodily fluids. Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease. It occurs in animals such as rodents and primates and occurs in remote parts of the central and west Africa,
