At least 50 dead after gunmen attack worshipers at church in Nigeria – Times of India

Abuja: At least 50 people were killed and others injured by gunmen on Sunday during a mass attack on a Catholic church in Nigeria’s Ondo state. A doctor and local media gave this information.
A doctor at a hospital in Owo, a state city in Nigeria’s southwest, told Reuters that at least 50 bodies had been taken to the FMC (Federal Medical Center) and St. Louis Catholic Hospital in Owo.
President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack, calling it “heinous”. The identity and motive of the attackers were not immediately clear.
Local media said gunmen opened fire on worshipers and detonated the church. Women and children were also among those killed.
Ondo State Police Spokesperson Funamiyo Ibukun Odunalmi said only that there had been an incident at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo and added that police would issue another statement soon.
Africa’s most populous country has seen attacks and kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs, mostly in its northwest. Such attacks are rare in south-western Nigeria.
The governor of Ondo State, Arkunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, shortened his visit to the capital Abuja and returned to Ondo after the attack. “We will commit every available resource to trace and pay for these attackers,” he said in a statement.
