At least four climbers were killed on Tuesday in an avalanche on Mount Draupadi’s Danda-II summit in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district.

A team of 34 trainee climbers, seven trainers and a nursing assistant from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) got trapped in the avalanche, the institute said in a statement. 28 trainees are reported to be trapped after the avalanche.

“Rescue work is in progress, 4 bodies have been recovered so far. SDRF, NDRF and Indian Air Force are assisting the rescue teams,” the NIM statement said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that fast relief and rescue work is going on.

“I pray for the people trapped in the avalanche. Spoke to Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and requested to take help of Indian Army to expedite the rescue operation. Mr Singh has assured us of all possible help from the central government,” Mr Dhami said.

A statement issued by the state government said that at present, rapid relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the district administration, NDRF, SDRF, Army and ITBP personnel as well as the team of NIM to evacuate the trainees as soon as possible. is being run.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that he is deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives due to a landslide affecting the mountaineering expedition carried out by the NIM in Uttarkashi.

“My condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. Talking to CM Uttarakhand took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are on to help the stranded climbers.”
