ATK Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Result

ATK Mohun Bagan earned bragging rights in the first round after beating arch-rivals East Bengal 2-0 to register their fifth consecutive win in the Kolkata derby in the Indian Super League on Saturday (October 29).

Juan Ferrando made just one change from ATK Mohun Bagan’s side that sank KBFC in Kochi and Subhasish Bose replaced Aashiq Kuruniyan to beat the left flank 4-3-3. Stephen Constantine fielded the same eleven who had scored all three points against NEUFC in Guwahati.

In the opening 10 minutes of the high-octane full-contact competition, ATK Mohun Bagan looked dangerous. As his shot went across the goal and out of play, Bose came close. East Bengal’s nose almost opened in the 16th minute, but Thongkhosim Haokip’s header from Naorem Singh’s cross was saved by Vishal Kaith.

In the middle of the first half, Jordan O’Doherty goes down in the box after a nudge from Ashish Rai. Ten minutes later, Baumus walked into the box but waited too long for his shot to be fired. His last attempt was blocked by Sarthak Golui.

The Mariners shed their first blood in the 56th minute. Baumus found himself open in midfield. The French tried their luck at the border and it paid off. The ball jumped right in front of Kamaljit Singh and hit the back of the net.

Before the torchbearers could recover, ATK Mohun Bagan doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later. Dimitri Petratos’ effort found its way through Manveer. The striker’s goal-bound shot took a slight deflection from Jerry Lalrinzuala’s boot and thrashed Kamaljeet at the near-post.

In the 68th minute, Caith negated O’Doherty’s powerful long-range effort. Minutes later, Ileandro dos Santos came in for Iván González and pitched through the ATKMB defense. He played a sublime pass towards Clayton Silva before the attack was thwarted by Mariners’ substitute Lenny Rodrigues, summarizing the day for East Bengal.

The win has propelled ATK Mohun Bagan to the fourth position in the ISL. With the game in hand they are four points away from the top. The Mariners will travel to the west coast to face Mumbai City FC in their next match on 6 November.

After losing the derby, East Bengal FC finished eighth in the ISL standings. They will host Chennaiyin FC in their next match on November 4. (with IANS inputs)
