Stefanos Tsitsipas maintained his perfect Grand Slam quarter-final record as he defeated 11-seeded Janik Sinner 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The 23-year-old Greek star will face the winner of the quarter-final between Russian Daniil Medvedev and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassim on Wednesday.

With Melbourne’s large Greek population, Tsitsipas has always had strong support at the Australian Open and was so again in the struggle against Sinar.

The only real delay came from a weather disturbance when a late afternoon storm meant the roof at Rod Laver Arena had to be closed when the Greek star was already on a set and break.

“I think my humility helped a lot today. I knew I was going on the court in front of a really good player. I tried to focus on my best shots and it paid off more than I thought, He said in his on-court interview. ,

“Once again, with the support of the crowd, it’s really incredible to step on that court.”

Last year’s Roland Garros finalist Tsitsipas was troubled by elbow problems at the end of last season and was worried he would not be able to play in Australia.

“I’m pretty sure my doctor is watching right now. He’s texting me after every single game,” he said.

“He said ‘I don’t expect to see you play in Australia’. But I proved him wrong. I’m glad I found the right man to bring me back even stronger.”
