Raipur: Seven school children aged 4 to 7 years died in a head-on collision between a truck and a truck auto rickshaw taking them home Chattisgarh‘S Kanker District on Thursday. The condition of another child and the auto driver is critical.

Kanker SP Shalabh Sinha told TOI that the accident happened at Bhanupratappur (100 km from Raipur) when the auto driver was taking home eight children from a private school.
SP Sinha said, “According to eyewitnesses, the auto driver suddenly took a turn on the wrong side of the road, hitting the truck coming from the opposite direction.” Five children died on the spot and two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The only surviving student among the students has been referred to Raipur.
The collision was so strong that the auto parts flew away. Eyewitnesses said the auto got trapped under the truck and was dragged along the road as children screamed in pain and panic. Police say that as soon as the truck driver stopped the vehicle, he jumped out and fled.
The SP said that a case would be registered on the basis of CCTV footage and statements of witnesses. Police is checking the fitness, permit and speed of both the vehicles.
