Auto Sales March 2022: Tata’s passenger vehicle sales up 43 percent at 42,293 units, record highest ever annual sales

Domestic carmaker Tata Motors posted strong sales in the month of March 2022, as well as its Q4 2022 results, registering growth across sectors, despite supply challenges impacted by global shortage of semiconductors. The company is firing on all cylinders, and for the right reasons, because its biggest product in recent months has positively impacted its overall growth. In the domestic market, the company registered an overall growth of 30 per cent at 86,718 units sold in March 2022 as compared to 66,462 units sold in March 2021. Q4 2022 results also showed an upward trend with a growth of 28 per cent. In terms of total domestic sales, it was recorded at 2,33,078 units as against 1,82,477 units in Q4 FY21.

Compared to FY2011, where Tata sold 4,64,062 units, the company recorded 6,92,554 units in FY12, a 49 per cent increase in its domestic sales. In terms of passenger vehicles (PV) alone, Tata Motors recorded its highest ever annual sales of 3,70,372 units in FY12, up 67 per cent as against 1,31,196 units sold in FY2011. It registered a growth of 47 per cent, its highest ever quarterly sales in Q4FY22, with 1,23,051 units as compared to 83,857 units sold in Q4FY21. In the month of March 2022, the company recorded its highest ever monthly sales of 42,293 units, a growth of 43 per cent as against 29,654 units in March 2021.

Tata Motors has also registered strong numbers with its electric vehicles, which is supported by the flagship Tata Nexon EV as well as the recently introduced Tata Tigor EV. The company recorded its highest annual EV sales of 19,106 units in FY2012, a growth of 353 per cent as compared to 4,219 units in FY2011. It also performed well in Q4FY22, registering a growth of 432 per cent with 9,095 units sold, as compared to 1,711 EVs sold in Q4FY21. In March 2022, the company sold 3,357 EV units, registering a growth of 377 per cent, as against 705 units sold in March 2021.

The commercial vehicle segment also saw a growth in its overall domestic sales registering a growth of 21 per cent as 44,425 units were sold in March 2022 as compared to 36,808 units sold in March 2021. Sales for Q4FY22 were recorded at 48,202 units as against 40,647 sold in the same period last year, a growth of 15.67 per cent. The company recorded annual CV sales of 3,22,182 units in FY12, up 33 per cent as compared to 2,42,037 units in FY2011.

However, exports saw a decline in sales, as the company registered a 28 per cent decline in March 2022, exporting 2,625 units as compared to 3,654 units in March 2021. However, Q4FY22 numbers are dominant, with 9,843 exports, a 16 per cent increase as compared to 8,517 units exported in the same period last year. The FY22 overseas sales numbers are even stronger, as the company exported 34,790 units as against 20,283 units in FY2011, a growth of 72 per cent. Overall, the cumulative sales of CVs for the company in the month of March 2022 stood at 47,050 units as against 40,462 units from March 2021, a growth of 16 per cent.
