GUWAHATI: The much awaited Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) was launched on Tuesday evening by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa in Guwahati Sarma,
Guwahati Smart City Limited, an initiative of ITMS aims to reduce traffic congestion by automated traffic management which will be tracked CCTV cameras. Officials said the surveillance would be done by the police from a command and control centre.
“At all junctions in Guwahati, traffic signals will now be given automatically. The operation will be controlled centrally,” Sarma said. He said that 20 junctions from Nepali Mandir to Khanapara would become operational from Tuesday. In the second phase, he said that in the second phase, about 30 junctions will start. The final phase will cover 44 junctions, Sarma said. “The entire project will be completed by this financial year,” Sarma said. “If anyone does not wear a helmet, or violates a traffic signal, he will be monitored live,” he said.
In all, 94 traffic junctions in the city will be involved in the project, officials said, adding that it will cost around Rs 78 crore.
Officials said that e-challans would be sent through online mode to those violating the traffic signal. Arrangements have been made in the office of DCP Central to analyze the scenes captured in the CCTV cameras.
“The speed violation will be detected by the cameras. A monitoring officer said that the number plates of the vehicles would be automatically recognized and evidence would be submitted to prove the violation of traffic rules. He said dedicated technical persons and operators would handle the system but police personnel would also be trained so that they could eventually operate the system.
“ITMS will ensure better accountability by citizens through access to police through intelligent dashboards for quick and effective response, better visibility and transparency and help in emergency services and faster turn-around times by providing a green corridor. The project is also expected to help in improving traffic discipline through effective policing and maintenance of law and order and enforcement systems using command and control centres, a government release said.
ITMS will also provide live alert facility in case of any incident or incident.
