Automobile retail sales up 11 per cent in September on festive euphoria, better supplies

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said on Tuesday that automobile retail sales in India grew 11 per cent in September as better supplies from manufacturers helped dealers expedite deliveries to customers.

Last month, the total retail sales stood at 14,64,001 units as against 13,19,647 units in September 2021. FADA said that with further pick-up in the festive season, it expects to see even better sales in October.

“Dealers believe that this will be the best festive time in a decade for the passenger vehicle segment as we are expecting even more sales during the month,” the statement said.

Barring tractors and some three-wheeler trims, all other segments such as passenger and commercial vehicles and two-wheelers performed better in September than in the year-ago period.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles increased by 10 per cent to 2,60,556 units last month as against 2,37,502 units in September 2021.

Manish Raj Singhania, President, Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) said in a statement, “Better availability of cars due to easing of semiconductor supply, new launches and feature rich products have connected customers with dealerships to get their preferred vehicles. kept.”

He said that as semiconductor supply continues to be short-lived, FADA has requested OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to match supply with demand to further boost PV sales.

Similarly, two-wheeler registrations registered a growth of 9 per cent to 10,15,702 units last month as against 9,31,654 units in September last year.

Singhania said the entry-level bike space was the worst hit, thus leading to a decline in sales for the entire two-wheeler segment.

FADA said sales of commercial vehicles increased to 71,233 units as compared to 59,927 units in September last year, a growth of 19 per cent.

Tractor sales last month stood at 52,595 units as against 53,392 units in September last year.

In the passenger vehicle space, Maruti Suzuki India led the vertical with retail at 1,03,912 units in September as against 99,276 units in the year-ago period.

FADA said Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors saw the registration of 39,118 and 36,435 units respectively last month.

In the two-wheeler space, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India sold 2,84,160 units in September. It was followed by Hero MotoCorp with 2,50,246 units registered.

FADA said Tata Motors led the commercial vehicle segment with sales of 28,615 units last month. In the three-wheeler vertical, Bajaj Auto saw growth with sales of 19,474 units last month.
