B Bommai credits Siddaramaiah for renaming Bengaluru airport

B Bommai said that the BS Yediyurappa government has decided to rename the airport.

Bengaluru:

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has responded to Congress leader Siddaramaiah’s claims about the international airport in Bengaluru and asked why it took four years for the Congress to decide on the name of the airport.

Mr. Bommai hit back at Siddaramaiah who said that it was the Congress government that named the Bangalore International Airport after Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

“On February 27, 2009, the BJP government led by the then Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa made a proposal to the Center to name the airport after Kempegowda,”

“However, it took almost 4 years for the then UPA government to decide whether to name the airport after Kempegowda or not. Siddaramaiah appeared before the media and said that he is the cause of all good things in Karnataka. My question Why did you do that?” UPA government waited 4 years for BJP government’s decision? he questioned.

He further questioned the silence of the previous UPA-led government in Karnataka when there was no response from the Center till 2011.

“When there was no response from the Central Government till 2011, then in 2011, after discussion in the House, it was decided in a cabinet meeting to name the airport after Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, and a proposal was submitted to the Central Government. Even then, what is the reason why the then UPA-led central government kept silent about this?” Read his tweet.

Bommai said that in 2012, a resolution was passed in both the houses to name the international airport after Kempegowda and a resolution for the same was submitted again to the central government.

The tussle between the ruling BJP and the Congress broke out after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 108-feet tall statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda in the city.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah claimed credit for the statue. He tweeted, “We welcome @narendramodi to Bangalore to inaugurate the statue of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda. But, one must question whether @BJP4India & @BJPKarnataka Govt are true followers of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda & his values. “

In another tweet, he said, “@INCKarnataka Party is a follower of the values of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda. In his honor we have named Bangalore Airport as Kempegowda International Airport. The main metro station of Bangalore is also named after Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Metro Station. Was placed.”
