BA graduate who drives auto offers women in Chennai a free ride after 10 pm

An autorickshaw driver in Chennai is spreading the message of humanity by offering free rides to women and the elderly. 50-year-old Raji Ashok is challenging patriarchal norms and making women feel safe while traveling on public transport. Raji told ANI that she has been driving autos for the last 23 years, and is giving free rides to girl students, elderly people and women after 10 pm. She also provides free ride to the hospital in case of emergency. Raazi shares that even if a woman or an elderly person needs to go to the hospital in the middle of the night, she makes sure to be available for them.

When the story of this lady autorickshaw driver surfaced, people on the internet did not hold back but applauded this one-of-a-kind driver for being such a great source of help to those in need. Raji is a BA graduate, but despite her degree, she found it difficult to find work in the city, so she opted to drive an autorickshaw to support her family. Raji moved to Chennai from Kerala with her husband, who is also an autorickshaw driver.

During the peak times of COVID-19, several auto-rickshaw drivers came forward and offered free rides to COVID positive patients to hospitals. From Bhopal to Ranchi and Delhi to Pune, the many stories of auto-rickshaw drivers and their commitment to work stunned the internet. Not only the free ride, he had also fully equipped his vehicle with PPE kits, masks and sanitizers. Some also got oxygen cylinders installed so that there is no casualty due to lack of oxygen on the way.
