Former Union minister Babul Supriyo today joined Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, two months after he was asked to resign as a junior minister in the environment ministry and a month after he was asked to join another party. Mr Supriyo is the fifth BJP leader – there were four other BJP MLAs – joining the Trinamool Congress after Ms Banerjee’s party won the assembly elections in May and retained power. Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said today that more BJP leaders are in talks to join the party. Mr. Ghosh of news agency ANI said, “Many BJP leaders are in touch with the Trinamool leadership. Mr Supriyo was seen upset after stepping down as a Union minister in the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who in July refreshed the cabinet by appointing 43 new names.

This camaraderie on social media is in stark contrast to the turbulent times between Mr. Supriyo and Ms. Banerjee during and before campaigning for the assembly elections.

In June 2019, Mr Supriyo took a dig at the Chief Minister when he objected to BJP supporters raising slogans of “Jai Shri Ram”, which he claimed created unrest in West Bengal by the BJP “mixing religion with politics”. trying to do. The former junior environment minister had said, “He is a seasoned politician but his behavior is unusual and bizarre.”

In February this year, three months before the assembly elections in West Bengal, Mr. Supriyo took a dig at Ms. Banerjee over the Trinamool’s election slogan, “Bengal wants its daughter”. Mr Supriyo then tweeted, “Yes, we will bid him off this time.” Although Ms. Banerjee lost the election from Nandigram, her party performed well and stopped the BJP’s march into Bengal.
