back from the brink

From a cardiac arrest at the age of 34, Prasanna Karthik rebounded, lost 42 kg and made a mark as an endurance cyclist; And more importantly, he has been guiding others on diet and workout for free

Prasanna Karthik recalls two medical woes and how he overcame both not only from bullets, surgical threads and plates, but also from wafer-thin carbon wheels.

Prasanna, who suffered a heart attack on December 30, 2012, lit 43 candles on her birthday cake this week, October 19 – so, imagine how traumatized the medical incident nine years ago was to her family and friends. Delivers.

Prasanna will make sure his eyebrows go up, eyebrows bowed with a pleasant surprise this time.

After recovering, he began running and lost 22 kilograms, but remained nearly the same amount of flab, before achieving a healthy BMI.

In 2014, acting on a friend’s suggestion, he started cycling for heart health. However, it went beyond the natural blood-pumping machine and added to his entire being, soul and spirit for good measure, and made him an endurance cyclist, not to mention a “fitness trainer.”

Absorbed in randonneuring, he would go on to win four senior-rundonneuring (SR) titles (for the SR title, one must complete the 200, 300, 400 and 600 km Brevet de Randonneur Mondiaux or BRM in one year). He closed the 2019 season by participating in the 1200 kilometer Paris-Brest-Paris Brevet, which takes place once in four years. In addition, he has done a Les Ranones Mondiaux (LRM), which is a 1,000 km ride.

“Looking at what I went through and recovered from, some people started looking at me. As I didn’t want what happened to me to happen to them, I started getting familiar with diet and workout.

Consultations come on diet and exercise Free. Prasanna explains: “Training helps me increase my knowledge about diet and workout. I spend quality time on them to learn about all these things.”

It’s essentially about sharing with others how they minimized the effects of unhealthy eating and working behaviors.

“When I had a cardiac arrest, I was into weightlifting, but not cardio. I lived a sedentary life, and knew nothing about a healthy diet. And the stress of running the business also took a toll on my heart,” says the Velachery resident.

Prasanna admits that he is not a certified nutritionist, but has lost almost 42 kg twice – both after a cardiac event and later, after an accident that rendered him hors d combat By the end of the months – “I know how the body reacts to different diets”.

In addition to reading about these twin topics, he took ample time out of his property development business for the kettlebell certification program, which helps him write workout regimens for his friends.

Nearly three years after a cardiac arrest and his transformation into an endurance cyclist, an accident left him far behind and he almost had to start anew from class one.

It was a bicycle accident that happened while cycling downhill and the brakes gave way.

“I broke my wrist – it completely fell off. I broke my collar bone. I was out of action for six months. One plate was put in my shoulder and the other in my wrist, and I started to recover. During the period, I was not able to hold the handlebar. I had also gained a lot of weight.”

He repeated the cycle of recovery and restoration and transformation, again losing over 40kg.

He faced time constraints when he returned to his business, and was forced to cut back on the time he could devote to guiding others. Prasanna now only focuses on helping people on diet.

“Currently, I am guiding six people with the diet.” When it comes to workouts, he helps others with basic techniques like posture correction. He explains that he will somehow find time to volunteer at random events. A member of the Madras Randoneurs, he is part of the ride’s responsibility. Although volunteering gets him a lot because it requires him to keep shuffling between control points—”Volunteering is more taxing than riding”—it holds back enough for him, in terms of fulfillment
