Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh will face each other in the final of the Ranji Trophy starting on Wednesday in Bengaluru. Madhya Pradesh is in the final for the first time, while Mumbai is the domestic powerhouse, having won the competition on 41 occasions. Mumbai captain Prithvi Shaw will play against Chandrakant Pandit’s Madhya Pradesh, and it is important to mention that Pandit was Shaw’s first domestic cricket coach.
“I think it is a matter of great pride to be the captain of Mumbai. Five years ago, playing in the final, Chandu sir was the coach, and playing against him, it is going to be really challenging for us, whoever is playing. Really proud to captain Mumbai. Looking back five years, my first stint in 2016-17 and then captaining Mumbai under Vijay Hazare and now leading the Ranji Trophy, it is a matter of pride for me. Hope to take the cup back home,” Shaw said during a press conference in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
“It’s nowhere on my mind you know – a comeback to the Indian team. Getting the cup is my main objective and thinking of nothing but winning it. The finals are from tomorrow, so I’m not thinking of anything else.” I have done preparations only for Ranji Trophy, not focusing on what is happening outside. Shaw scored a half-century against Uttarakhand in the quarter-finals and Uttar Pradesh in the semi-finals.
Talking about his own performances, Shaw said: “I scored a few fifties, but that’s definitely not enough for me. Nobody even congratulated me after those fifties. So, in that sense, I feel bad too. But I am happy that my team is doing well. As a captain, you have to take that as well – all the 21 players I have got here.”
