Bad Children’s Day for Boris Johnson, British PM

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has agreed to step down from the top post amid his resignation from the Conservative government, The Guardian reported on Thursday.

Boris Johnson will announce his resignation as British prime minister later today, the BBC reported. He will also step down as leader of the Conservative Party.

More than 50 ministers have left the UK government in less than 48 hours, saying Johnson did not deserve to be in charge after several scandals, while dozens in his Conservative party are in open rebellion.

Johnson will remain as prime minister until the autumn, when a new Tory leader is officially appointed at the Conservative Party convention in October this year.

After several days of fighting for his job, Johnson was dumped by all but a handful of colleagues. It was a far cry from the time Johnson, 58, came to power in 2019, winning votes in parts of Britain that had never supported his Conservative Party before.

Even his finance minister, Nadim Zhawi, who was appointed to his post only on Wednesday, asked his boss to resign. Shortly thereafter, newly appointed Education Secretary Michelle Donelan Resigned saying that he had “pleaded” to part ways with the PM.

Earlier, Johnson had turned down calls by his cabinet to step down after it emerged that he had allegedly promoted a lawmaker accused of sexual misconduct, the latest in a two-year term beset by scandals.

Chris Pincher Scandal

The latest scandal saw Boris Johnson hit by allegations that he failed to come clean about MP Chris Pincher, who was appointed to a senior position in 2019 despite sexual misconduct claims against him.

On 1 July, the UK government claimed that Johnson was unaware of the allegations against Pincher. But a spokesperson later revealed that this was not entirely true and that the PM was aware of the allegations. On Tuesday, Simon McDonald, the most senior official in the UK Foreign Office between 2015 and 2020, also accused the prime minister of lying.

Soon, Johnson faced pressure to explain what he knew about past misconduct allegations against lawmaker Chris Pincher, who resigned as deputy chief whip last week after saying he had joined a private club. I had caught two people.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid quit the government After Johnson was forced to admit he changed his story on how he handled the charges against Pincher, the current crisis gripped Johnson and the Tory government.
