In what can be called the final nail in the MVA government’s coffin, Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday resigned from the chief minister’s post after the Supreme Court asked him to prove his majority in the assembly.
Following Uddhav’s resignation, there was celebration in the BJP camp and party leaders distributed sweets and raised slogans at the legislative meeting at the Taj Hotel, said Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis, who was also Uddhav’s predecessor.
When asked about the party’s next move, Fadnavis told reporters, “We will tell you everything tomorrow (Thursday).”
Fadnavis later tweeted about his meeting with BJP as well as independent MLAs.

sources told CNN-News18 The BJP’s core committee will meet on Thursday at 12 noon to decide the future strategy and it is expected that the BJP will stake claim to form the government on July 1. BJP general secretary CT Ravi, who is in charge of his party’s affairs. Maharashtra and state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil will also meet Fadnavis over tea tomorrow.
With the support of Eknath Shinde and other rebel MLAs, who moved from Guwahati to Goa on Wednesday, the BJP is set to form the next government. It is also supported by several independent candidates, who had earlier supported the MVA government of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress.
Chandrakant Patil told reporters that the rebel MLAs, who are scheduled to land in Mumbai on Thursday, should arrive only on the day of swearing-in. “Those (rebel Shiv Sena MLAs) who were reaching Mumbai yesterday, I request them not to come tomorrow, they should come on the day of swearing-in,” he said.
Meanwhile, there was a strong reaction from the BJP on Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation, with its leaders taking a dig at Uddhav invoking ‘karma’ and the legacy of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.
“Karma spares no one,” said CT Ravi.
“Balasaheb Thackeray was a man who could control governments even though he was not in power. At the same time, his sons could not control their party even while in power. What a fall from grace,” tweeted Amit Malviya, in-charge of BJP’s IT department.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, however, praised Uddhav Thackeray, saying that we have lost a “sensitive, decent” chief minister. Raut wrote on Twitter, “Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resigned very humbly. We have lost a sensitive, decent Chief Minister. History is witness that cheating does not end well. Thackeray won. This is the beginning of a resounding victory for Shiv Sena,” read a loose translation of his tweet in Hindi.
