Bangladeshi student accuses teacher of rape; West Bengal women’s panel took cognizance

The West Bengal Commission for Women on May 15 said it has taken note of the allegations of rape and death threats made by a Bangladeshi student against a university professor in Paschim Bardhaman district.

Police after investigation will recommend appropriate action if the allegation is found to be true.

Chairman of the commission Leena Gangopadhyay told PTI It has spoken to all concerned including the complainant – a female student living in a hostel of the state-run Kazi Nazrul University near Asansol on Saturday.

The members of the commission recommended the police to investigate all the points mentioned in the complaint of the woman, including the alleged threats to kill her through SMS by the accused.

Ms Gangopadhyay said the commission had received a complaint from a post-graduate student that the accused had raped her in his cabin at a private hospital where she was admitted after “death by suicide attempt” because their relationship I was upset.

“Apart from our members who met him in person, I spoke to him on phone more than once and heard his views.

“We have also been informed by him that when he lodged a complaint with the police, he allegedly received threats through SMS from the professor. We know that the accused was arrested and then got bail. Our Have nothing to comment on the judicial process.” But it will ensure that complaints are thoroughly investigated by the police. If the allegations are found to be true, then the accused should be punished as per the law,” Ms Gangopadhyay said.

The commission has spoken to all stakeholders to reach the truth, she said.

The chairman of the commission said that there are some discrepancies in the alleged incident of rape in the nursing home and the claims of the university authorities.

“We want to ensure the safety of the girl student. We have sent some recommendations to the police and the university to see that no physical harm is done to her,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission said, “We have received an official complaint from the student. We have forwarded it to the university authorities and the police and urged them to look into the issue, investigate the complaint and take appropriate action.” ”

A spokesman for the university said PTI The concerned student has 18 months left to complete the course.

He said that the university would extend full cooperation to the investigating officers and would take appropriate action if the allegations were found to be true.

“As of now, we have nothing further to comment on the alleged incident,” he added.

The name of the accused, who got anticipatory bail after filing the complaint last week, was withheld pending investigation.
