Dhaka:

A knee-high celebrity cow that became a sensation in Bangladesh has gained posthumous recognition as the smallest in the world, just weeks after her untimely demise.

Rani, only 50.8 cm (20 in) tall, became an instant Internet celebrity, with tens of thousands of people rushing to the farm outside Dhaka to catch a glimpse of the little cow.

But tragedy struck on August 19, just after its owners applied to Guinness World Records, when the beloved bovine suddenly died due to a sudden internal buildup of gas.

The cow’s owner, Qazi Mohammad Abu Sufyan, said he received an email from Guinness World Records on Monday saying the queen’s application had been accepted.

A statement on the Guinness website confirmed the status of the Miniature Bhutti world-record cow, surpassing the previous holder, an Indian cow named Manikyam who stood 61 cm from hoof to wither.

“We sent several videos of the queen as prescribed by Guinness World Records. We have also sent the postmortem report to the Guinness authorities to see that there was nothing unusual about her death,” Sufyan told AFP.

Sufian said he had also sent the Guinness Queen’s medical records when she asked if she had received hormone injections.

“We have mixed feelings after Rani was recognized. We are glad that she got due respect. But we are very sad because she is no more with us,” Sufyan said.

“As soon as we told her the news, her caretaker burst into tears.”
