Music composer Bappi Lahiri, known for his synthesized disco beats, passed away last night at the age of 69 in a Mumbai hospital. He was in the hospital for a month and was undergoing treatment for several health problems, reports news agency PTI. “Bappi Lahiri was admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But on Tuesday, his health deteriorated and his family called a doctor to visit his home. He was brought to the hospital. He had several health problems. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, Director, Criticare Hospital told PTI.

One of the most influential figures in Indian film music, Bappi Lahiri was a pioneer of disco in Bollywood of the 80s and 90s, composing superhit soundtracks for films such as Disco Dancer, Dance Dance And Faithful. He also had extensive music credits in the world of Bengali cinema. He sang many of his compositions, among them Somebody dance here From disco dancer And Lovecalm down From sir. Bappi Da, as he was fondly known, rocked a striking figure with his trademark gold chain and sunglasses.

Bappi Lahiri, real name Alokesh, also had a brief career as a politician, joined the BJP in 2014. He lost the Lok Sabha elections that year to the Trinamool candidate.

Bappi Lahiri’s last Bollywood song was Bhakaso for 2020 film rebel 3. He is survived by son Bappa and daughter Rema.
