Barcelona have made an offer to Bayern Munich for star striker Robert Lewandowski, the Spanish club’s president said on Thursday.

“We have made an offer for the player and we are waiting for a response,” said Barcelona president Joan Laporta. “We thank the player for showing interest in our club.”

Lewandowski said in late May that “my story with Bayern Munich is over” and that a transfer to a new club would be the best solution. The 33-year-old Poland striker has another season on contract with the Bundesliga giant.

Contract extension talks between Bayern and Lewandowski broke down this season with both sides citing different reasons. While the club said the player had declined his offer, his agent said that an offer was never made by Bayern.

A year after the departure of Lionel Messi, Barcelona are looking to rebuild their attack. It ended the previous season without a title, coming second only to champions Real Madrid in the Spanish league and failing to be eliminated from the Champions League group stage.

The Catalan club is deeply in debt. It recently sold 10% of its Spanish league television rights for only 200 million euros ($203 million) for the next 25 years. Some of them will be used by him to sign new players.

This week it added new signings to Frank Casey and Andreas Christensen to bolster their midfield and defense respectively.

Lewandowski would be a big boost to their attack.

He has scored 312 goals in 384 Bundesliga games for Bayern and former club Borussia Dortmund. He scored 35 goals in 34 matches last season and became Bundesliga’s leading scorer for the fifth consecutive season, and seventh overall.
