Bayern Munich Down Freiburg To Go Four Points Clear In Bundesliga

Bayern Munich extended a four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Freiburg, which suffered their first loss in any competition this season. Second-placed Borussia Dortmund later missed a chance to curtail Bayern’s lead when they lost 2–1 at RB Leipzig. In Munich, Leon Goretzka put Bayern ahead with half an hour at the Allianz Arena before Robert Lewandowski scored his 13th Bundesliga goal this season with 15 minutes remaining. Bayern have scored 100 goals this calendar year, one less than the record for a German club when Cologne scored 101 times in 1977. Freiburg, who are third in Germany’s top flight, had a somewhat nervous look at the Bayern ranks when Janick was replaced. In the end Haberer defeated Manuel Neuer in stoppage time.

Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann was pleased with the “very important victory against a direct competitor”.

“Freiberg defended well in the box, in the end, two goals were enough, but we could have scored more,” Nagelsmann said.

Under Christian Stritch, the longest-serving Bundesliga coach, Freiburg beat Champions League teams Dortmund and Wolfsburg this season and held RB Leipzig to a draw.

Yet they failed to claim victory for the first time against Bayern, instead suffering their 19th loss in 22 attempts, as well as three draws.

One of the visitors’ best chances fell to striker Lukas Hoehler, who quickly got behind on the defense, but pushed it wide of the post.

Freiburg have the best defense of the league, scoring only nine goals in 11 games.

Still Bayern took a deserved lead in the half-hour when Thomas Müller’s pass into the box was swept inside the post by Goretzka.

Freiburg held firm until Lewandowski, who marked his 100th Champions League appearance in midweek with a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over Benfica, scored his 22nd goal of the season in all competitions.

Leroy Sane slams the ball towards goal and Lewandowski limps to run the shot around Mark Flecken.

Haberer claimed Freiburg’s consolation goal when he beat Bayern defender Tanguy Nianzo and swung the ball into the far corner.

Later, Dortmund captain Marco Reus was left furious after his team lost in Leipzig with barely a fight.

“We weren’t on the same level as him in terms of our aggression or opening exchanges,” said Dortmund’s second-half equalizer.

“Overall, it was very low. The truth is that we just didn’t deserve to win.”

On the eve of the match, Leipzig coach Jesse Marsh announced that it was “time for us to beat a top team”.

His players duly delivered and took an early lead when Christopher Nkunku scored for Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and slipped into an empty net.

Dortmund pulled a goal back through Reus, but Leipzig restored their lead when Nkunku and Dominic Soboszlai set up Yusuf Poulsen to tap in the winner, before the hosts also had a goal from Nordi Mukilee. Don’t be

“It was an important win. There were a lot of good individual performances and there’s still a lot of work to do, but I’m very proud of the team,” Marsh said.

The result moves Leipzig to fifth place, one point behind Wolfsburg, whose new head coach Florian Kohfelt replaced Mark van Bommel to earn their third straight victory with a 1–0 home win at Augsburg.

Former Manchester City forward Lukas Namecha celebrated his first call up for Germany with the winning goal from the post.
