The civic body of the city is all set to start tuition centers for children from underprivileged backgrounds in different parts of the city from September 5 on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

Unique initiative “Vidyarthi Belaku Adhyayan Kendra” will be launched on pilot basis at ten locations with the help of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) where teachers will help poor children from slum and below poverty line families with tuition classes , will complement them. Learning skills and also help them do household chores.

“There are many students in the city who cannot afford to go to tuitions and acquire more skills to prepare for the exams due to financial crunch. So we planned to start tuition centers in our BBMP schools, where 25 to 30 students would be admitted,” said DS Umesh, assistant commissioner (education), BBMP.

Agastya International Foundation, an NGO will help the civic body to set up tuition centres. “Work order has been issued regarding setting up the centre. The NGO will provide study material to the students and equipment for the learning centres,” Mr. Umesh said.

Meanwhile, interested school teachers and eligible youth who want to teach students can apply. The civic body will provide an honorarium of ₹3,500 to a teacher per month.

These classes will be held from 5.30 pm to 7 pm and since this is a pilot project, classes will be held for children from class 3 to 5. “After seeing how the initiative pans out, BBMP will extend the tuition class. Till high school,” Mr. Umesh said.
