Before Congress President’s election, Tharoor said, ‘Party youngsters with me, seniors supporting Kharge’

Congress Presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor on Saturday claimed that youth and people in the lower strata of the party are supporting him, while seniors are supporting his rival Mallikarjun Kharge. He also said that no Congress President can work keeping distance from the Gandhi family as their DNA runs with the blood of the party.

“I am getting the support of young voters. I am getting good response from lower level. Seniors are going with Kharge. We are talking about change and bigwigs oppose it,” Tharoor said at a press conference here as part of his campaign. Acknowledging that many office-bearers of the party are campaigning openly for his rival candidate, he pointed out that the election will be held through secret ballots and that a senior leader and a member of a lower rank have equal weightage to the vote.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP said it would be foolish for any Congress president to distance himself from the Gandhi family as the Gandhi family is popular and their DNA runs with the party’s blood. He said the new Congress president would continue to work together to strengthen the party and his priority would be to form a united opposition to reduce vote-sharing.

“We should work to form a national ‘gathbandhan’ (alliance). If it is not possible at the national level, then we will have to find out state wise,” the diplomat-turned-politician said, adding that if he is elected, the power would be The decentralization of the U.S. and bringing about a change by involving young blood in the leadership will be at the core of his tenure.

“Many colleagues had left the party due to various reasons. No one will leave because of neglect during my tenure. Tharoor said he visited 11 states during his campaign and that Assam is the only state in the Northeast region due to paucity of time and resources.

He also said that Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodi Yatra and party president election have created tremendous attraction for the Congress. “The Congress has not received the media attention in the last eight years as much as we have received after the announcement of the presidential election,” Tharoor said.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP has been pitted against veteran Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge for the election to the party’s highest office to be held on October 17. The election results will be declared on October 19.
