Beijing 2022: Final Olympic alpine ski event can’t take place on Saturday because of wind – official

Officials said the last Olympic alpine ski event of the Beijing Games would not take place on Saturday because of strong winds, with talks on a possible rescheduling going on.

“Due to frequent wind gusts and updated forecasts, the jury along with the organizers are unable to stage a mixed team parallel event today,” the International Ski Federation said.

Organizers face a race against time to reschedule the event, which will feature 15 teams in a knock-out format, with games officially ending on Sunday.

But on Sunday, more wind is forecast for Yanqing, north of Beijing.

The event is the last chance for American star Mikaela Shiffrin to leave China with a medal after she lost in the individual events, dropping out of three races in which she was a hot favorite.

If the event is definitively cancelled, it would be only the second time in Winter Olympic history that an event could not take place during the Games.

The last, according to AFP’s database, was the 10,000 meters speed skating event at the 1928 St. Moritz Games.
