Bengal BJP all guns blazing against TMC through rallies, protests in wake of SSC scam

The SSC scam in West Bengal in the last few weeks has given the state BJP unit a big card to play against the ruling TMC. “Chor dharo jail bharo (catch the thief, put them behind bars)” is a slogan used by the BJP from north Bengal to south Bengal, with leaders including Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanto Majumdar campaigning against the ruling party.

The BJP launched similar agitations against the TMC after the state assembly elections and the violence that followed. However, support for this was limited. This time, with the SSC scam, the party is going to tell people about the “corruption of the government”.

Bengal BJP co-in-charge Amit Malviya said, “The SSC scam has ruined the careers and aspirations of thousands of young men and women.” In the context of Mamata Banerjee Referring to Malviya as the “kingpin of the scam”, Malviya said the massive looting took place under the watch of the chief minister.

“The BJP has taken to the streets and protesting in every district and village to ensure that justice is not denied to thousands of people. We saw mountains of cash belong to the poor and deserving people who were denied a fair chance of livelihood,” he said.

BJP insiders told News18 that though the Saradha and Narada scam affected people, as it was not corruption within the government, people still had faith in CM Banerjee.

The party says that since people in top positions are involved in the scam, there is a need to make people aware that the government is corrupt. Ahead of next year’s panchayat elections, the BJP is looking to reach out to young teacher applicants, who form a major part of the youth demographic.

Rallies, dharnas, district protests are all being taken out by the BJP. Interestingly, party insiders also say that the SSC scam has dealt a blow to the social politics of Bengal as teachers are considered to be culturally rich. However, this scam has paved the way for the common people to raise questions.

BJP has swung into action, but time will tell how successful the party is with this campaign.
