BJP’s West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar was arrested on Saturday when he was leading party workers at a protest rally in south Kolkata’s Hazra area near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence.

Mr Majumdar was supposed to address a rally in Hazra over alleged corruption in the state’s TMC government, but was taken into custody by the police before reaching there.

“It was a preventive arrest,” a senior police officer said. Soon, hundreds of BJP members gathered outside Kolkata’s police headquarters, Lalbazar, in the central part of the city, demanding the immediate release of Mr. Majumdar.

Raising slogans against the ruling Trinamool Congress, protesting BJP members burnt tyres, bringing traffic to a standstill in the congested area.

After some time the police evicted them and took them to Lalbazar Central Lockup. Mr Majumdar was also released after some time, the police officer said.

State BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “Protests against the corrupt TMC government in West Bengal are becoming a mass movement. It seems they are afraid of these protests and hence they arrested Sukanta Majumdar.”

TMC MP Shantanu Sen accused the BJP of trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

Amidst the arrest of Minister Partha Chatterjee in the Cash for School job scam, a protest rally was organized in Hazra, a few hundred meters from the residence of Chief Minister Kalighat.
