At least four people were arrested for assaulting a police officer and setting a police vehicle on fire during a BJP rally in Kolkata on September 14, an official said.

The arrests were made during overnight raids in Beliaghata, Topsia and Bobazar areas, he said.

A police vehicle was also torched near Kolkata Police Headquarters Lalbazar.

On the afternoon of September 14, a Kolkata Police official said, “The raids are still on.” He said the four arrested persons were identified from the video clips of the two incidents.

They have been booked under sections related to attempt to murder, damage to government property and preventing public servant from performing duty, the official said.

He said Mr Chattopadhyay suffered multiple fractures and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said the attack was the work of TMC supporters who attended the rally.

“Our workers are being implicated and false allegations are being made against them,” he alleged.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra said what would happen if the West Bengal government followed the “model” of Uttar Pradesh and “sends bulldozers to the homes of BJP workers destroying public property”.

Meanwhile, the BJP alleged that West Bengal has become a “lawless” and “bankrupt” state under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government.
