The purported images of two pages of the Class 12 State Board exam’s Life Science question paper surfaced on WhatsApp on March 18, two and a half hours after the exam began.

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, which conducts the exam, said it cannot be called a paper leak and called it an act of mischief.

Council chairman Chiranjib Bhattacharya said that some vested interests might have circulated the picture of the question paper long after it began, when it was drawing to a close.

“If the images are circulated two and a half hours after the commencement of the examination, then what is the big deal? The candidates can leave the examination hall by that time and if someone clicks the picture of the two pages outside the examination venue and shares them on social media, broadcast on the media, it does not reflect in any way on the conduct of the examination,” Mr. Bhattacharya pointed out. He appealed to the “mischief mongers” to desist from such “childish pranks” and help conduct the ongoing examinations smoothly in the interest of every candidate.

Mr. Bhattacharya said that CCTV surveillance at 2,349 locations and use of radio frequency devices in some of the more than 200 sensitive spots to detect the presence of any electronic devices has made the scope for question paper leak almost impossible.

Despite this, the Council is cautious, he said.

The sensitive sites are located in different districts and most of them are in Malda.

Mr Bhattacharya said the Council is tracking the source of the circulation of the question paper on WhatsApp and will submit a report to the government.

While there were reports of question paper images being circulated on WhatsApp in Class 10 state board exams this year, 2019, and earlier, this is the first time that such an incident has been reported during the Higher Secondary (HS) exams in recent times. Got it.

The HS exams started in West Bengal from March 14.
