Bengal SSC scam live updates: Partha Chatterjee expelled from TMC for ‘zero tolerance’, Abhishek Banerjee demands time-bound probe

His expulsion from these key departments and posts in the party came hours after Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh demanded his removal from the cabinet and expulsion from the party. “Parth Chatterjee, Minister in charge, Department of Industries, Commerce and Enterprise, Department of Information Technology and Electronics, Department of Parliamentary Affairs and Department of Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction, is relieved of his duties as MIC of the above Department,” a stated in the official order.

Banerjee later said at a government function here that she would look after the portfolios held by Chatterjee till the cabinet reshuffle takes place. It has been decided to remove Partha Chatterjee from all party posts. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said as long as the investigation is on, he will remain suspended from the party.

Chatterjee was the general secretary of TMC for nearly two decades. He was appointed the party’s national vice president earlier this year. He was also a member of the National Working Committee of the TMC and the chairman of its disciplinary committee, apart from being the editor of the party’s mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’ (Wake Up, Bengal).

Abhishek Banerjee did not agree. Two in the party said TMC’s doors would open only after Chatterjee is proved innocent. He also demanded that the investigation be completed within a stipulated time frame. The ED had arrested TMC general secretary Chatterjee on July 23 in connection with its probe into alleged irregularities in the recruitment drive by the School Service Commission (SSC).

The central agency has also arrested Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee and seized crores of rupees from their homes in different parts of the city. Reacting to the development, BJP’s West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that the TMC leadership was trying to make Chatterjee a scapegoat.

“Many people are involved in this. Sacking Partha da alone will not save the TMC,” Mazumdar said. Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty, who joined the BJP ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections last year, advised Chatterjee That they should shield anyone and not speak the truth.

“I personally feel that Partha Chatterjee was only the custodian of (confiscated) money. Someone else is behind this loot. I request both Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee not to bear this pain and reveal the truth,” Chakraborty said. CPI(M) leader and the lone Left Front Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal Vikas Bhattacharya told reporters, “The main culprit is the Chief Minister. Ask people to constitutionally remove him from the post of CM.

Earlier in the day, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh had demanded the dismissal of Chatterjee from the cabinet and expulsion from the party after nearly Rs 50 crore in cash was recovered from the properties attached to him.

Partha Chatterjee should be immediately removed from all posts in the ministry and party. He should be expelled. If this statement is found to be false, the party has every right to remove me from all posts. I will continue as @AITCofficial (TMC) constable,” tweeted Ghosh. Ghosh later tweeted that he was deleting the post, and that it was his personal opinion.

TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya, whose song ‘Khela hobe’ (There will be a game) which kept the party’s 2021 Assembly election campaign in the limelight, had also demanded Chatterjee’s expulsion from the party.
