BENGALURU: Bengaluru’s infamous traffic, which usually triggers memes and delays ambulances reaching critical patients on bad days, has offered an inspiring story.
On August 30, Dr Govind Nandakumar, a gastroenterology surgeon from Manipal Hospitals, got stuck in traffic in the Sarjapur-Marathahalli section when he was on his way to undergo a scheduled gallbladder surgery.
Keeping in mind that his first patient for the day was already ready for surgery and there were others who were expecting his procedures later, Nandakumar got out of his car and rushed to the hospital, which was almost was 3 km away.
Reiterating the mess of Bengaluru traffic, Nandakumar told TOI: “I had to reach Manipal Hospital in Sarjapur from Cunningham Road. Due to heavy rain and waterlogging, there was a traffic jam a few kilometers ahead of the hospital.” Finding no sign of smooth traffic, Nandakumar got out of his car, ran for about 45 minutes to reach his destination to see his patient. “I didn’t want to waste any more time waiting for traffic to end because my patients are not allowed to eat until the surgery is over. I didn’t want them to wait that long,” he said.
Nandakumar has been performing critical surgeries for the past 18 years and has performed more than 1,000 successful procedures till date. He specializes in dealing with surgical problems of the digestive system. He handles surgeries related to removal of tumors and damaged parts from the gastrointestinal tract.
