Bengaluru floods: War or word between BJP and Congress as IT hub remains submerged

Incessant rains and the resulting floods in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru led to a war of words between the ruling BJP and the Congress, as both the parties clashed over the problems of floods in the IT hub. While the ruling BJP is blaming the Congress for misgovernance and encroachment in India’s Silicon Valley, the opposition has blamed it for the BJP’s “failure”.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accused the previous Congress-led government of mismanagement, blaming it for the poor drainage system in the city. He said that an image was being created as if the entire city was facing difficulties, which was not the case.

“They allowed construction on lakes, storm water drains and their buffer zones,” he said.

Blaming the “misrule and unplanned administration” of previous Congress governments for the present misery, Bommai said they had allowed “right-left-centre” construction activities in lake areas, on tank dams and buffer zones.

He said he never thought of maintaining the lakes, he said and soon he took up the challenge of setting things right and allocated Rs 1,500 crore for the development of storm drains. Many encroachments are also being removed.

Hitting back at the Karnataka Chief Minister, Congress state president DK Shivakumar urged Basavaraj Bommai and his administration to hold elections or face elections. He also alleged that the “corrupt” BJP government and its officials are responsible for the current situation in Bengaluru.

“If there were encroachments during the Congress tenure, then let them (BJP) clean it up, they got five years’ time earlier, now they have got five years, they should have done this… Not performing while in the U.S. and blaming the previous Congress governments. Rather not correct,” said Shivakumar, reacting to the chief minister’s statement. Talking to reporters here, he said, “Such a situation never happened during the tenure of Congress.

“It is because of your corruption and corruption by your officers. The Chief Minister has to keep this in mind. People have given you a chance. If you are not able to perform, go for elections,” he said. Bommai had earlier on Tuesday blamed the “misadministration” of the previous Congress governments and unprecedented rains in the capital city for the floods.

Former Karnataka CM and Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah reminded the government of its promise to make Bengaluru a world-class city.
“#NammaBengaluru is sinking now because of your failure. It is time to remind you of the promise of making Bengaluru a world class city with modern infrastructure! With IT capital sinking, what is your solution? He said in a tweet.
