Bengaluru: Many roads inundated, cars damaged due to heavy rains

People going home had to take shelter at metro stations as it started raining around 7.30 pm.

Bangalore:

Heavy rains lashed Bengaluru on Wednesday evening, flooding several main roads in the east, south and central parts of the city, including the IT area of Bellandur. According to the Meteorological Department, Rajamahal Guttahalli in the northern part of the city recorded 59 mm of rain. The Met Office has issued a yellow alert indicating heavy rain, which will continue for the next three days.

Scenes from low-lying areas showed heavily waterlogged roads, open manholes overflowing with water, basement parking flooded and vehicles damaged. Office-goers on their way home had to take shelter at metro stations, as the rain started around 7.30 pm – evening time.

Last month, the city was battling unprecedented floods after three consecutive days of rain, which triggered a political tussle between the ruling BJP and the Congress.

Parts of the city where global IT companies and domestic start-ups are located were under water, which took days to recede. Roads were blocked in nearby residential areas and water and power lines were snapped. Tractors were pressed into service to rescue residents in some posh housing colonies.

Schools were closed and office-goers were asked to work from home.

Flight operations were affected and dramatic videos of rescues, flooded roads and homes, expensive cars submerged did the rounds of social media.

The IT Rajdhani has broken all records of heavy rainfall this year, which has been recorded at 1706 mm since the onset of monsoon. In 2017, the city received 1,696 mm of rain.
