Bengaluru University students demand ban on all vehicles on campus after government bus ran over girl

Students of Bangalore University have recently protested against Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) when an MSc first year student was run over by a government bus. As reported by The New Indian Express, the students demanded to restrict public access to the university campus, including public transport. The girl was seriously injured in the incident that took place on Monday morning near the Gyan Bharati campus, for which she had to be admitted to the hospital.

Speaking to a media outlet, Lokesh Ram, a student, claimed that this is not the first accident to happen on the campus. The student mentioned that many cases involving private and public vehicles have come to the fore in the last two months. “We are on an indefinite strike until the university decides to ban all vehicles from entering the campus except students and teaching and non-teaching staff of the university,” he said.

Bangalore University Vice Chancellor Dr Jayakar SM assured the students that the matter would be discussed with the state government. Meanwhile, another round of protests also broke out as police detained 15-20 protesting student leaders. The detained protesters were later released by the police.
