Bengaluru will soon be free from stray dogs: Karnataka minister

The BBMP officials involved in the program admitted that catching the dog was a big challenge.

Bangalore (Karnataka):

Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chauhan said on Monday that the Animal Husbandry Department is contemplating to make Bangalore free from stray dogs.

According to the department’s details, the Animal Husbandry Department is thinking of making Bengaluru stray dog free after receiving several complaints of dog attacks and rabies in the city.

“It is important to capture street dogs and give them all the necessary vaccinations so that people do not have to worry about street dogs. We also plan to bring them to a shelter where they can be rescued and cared for properly. People find no shortage and disturbance by street dogs,” said Mr. Chouhan.

Shri Chouhan held a meeting with the Brihat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the concerned department officials regarding vaccination to control the birth rate of dogs in Bengaluru.

He further said that considering all the details given by the officials of BBMP and Animal Husbandry Department, we will take a decision to make Bengaluru free from hungry dogs.

According to the survey, the stray dog population in the city has been exploding since 2018 despite at least 45,000 animals being neutered by the BBMP annually.

A 2019 survey showed that only 51 percent of the city’s 3,09,000 stray dogs were neutered, but officials say stopping the stray dog population is a more difficult challenge than it sounds .

The BBMP officials involved in the program admitted that catching the dog was a big challenge.

A senior BBMP official told ANI, “If they target 10 or 15 dogs, they can hardly catch one or two dogs as the strays hide in the culverts and drains.”
