Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta walked off the field to clear all his players from involvement in the post-match brawl. The Spaniard was also seen stopping Granit Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder, who is known for his short temper, was seen getting into an altercation with the match officials. Arteta had to chase Xhaka away to prevent him from clashing with Tottenham players. Needless to say, Arteta’s timely intervention helped Xhaka avoid suspension.

The video of Mikel Arteta’s quick reaction went viral in no time. Fans commented on how the Arsenal manager was desperate to save Xhaka from being suspended. “I’ve never seen Arteta sprint like that when he was a player,” one Twitter user joked.

Another social media user joked that it was actually the “best save of the match”.

A fan explained the reason behind the incident. “He knew it could get ugly, he couldn’t afford to lose her for any reason at this point in time,” the comment read.

Another Twitter user praised the Arsenal manager and commented, “Such great leadership Arteta shows leading this team. How he inspires them. Awesome.”

One user hilariously wrote, “I thought Granit Xhaka was going to call Gabriel Martinelli and another, but Mikel Arteta thought otherwise.”

Coming back to the on-field events, Arsenal took the lead after Tottenham’s veteran custodian Hugo Lloris conceded an own goal in the 14th minute. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard found the back of the net in the 36th minute to secure a two-goal cushion for the Gunners. An impressive win in the North London derby helped Arsenal move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.

“It’s a great situation to be in and enjoy every single moment and stay focused,” Mikel Arteta said at the post-match press conference.

Arsenal will next face Manchester United on 22 January.
