Better Call Sinha: How 18 Parties Agreed on the Opposition Candidate for Presidential Election?

After what seemed like a series of rejections, the selection of former Finance and External Affairs Minister and Vice President, Yashwant Sinha of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as the candidate for the presidential election went smoothly and unanimously to the opposition camp.

Sinha’s name has come not only from TMC, but also from Left and Congress.

The names of National Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, West Bengal Governor and diplomat Gopal Krishna Gandhi and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah were proposed earlier, but they turned down the offer.

TMC insiders said that Sinha was considered a big name with pan-India acceptance.

Some believe that Sinha has some influence in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well. He was active in politics in Bihar as well as in Delhi.
